Garden Waste

Please be advised that due to the high demand for the garden waste service, the current delivery time for bins to new customers is up to 8 weeks.

We apologise for this delay and extra resources are being put in place to reduce this lead time. We would like to thank customers for their patience in this matter and to remind customers that their contract does not commence until they have had their first collection

Garden Waste & Home Composting

You can recycle all your green waste at home and have no more trips to the Recycling Centre or mess in your car!  Our popular garden waste subscription service is available to homes across Tendring for £90.  The first year includes a one off £35 joining fee and the annual subscription fee of £55.

The 240L brown wheeled bin will be emptied fortnightly, 25 times a year.

What can go in the brown garden waste bin:

Garden Waste wheelie bin
  • Grass cuttings
  • Hedge trimmings
  • Leaves
  • Twigs
  • Small branches
  • Weeds
  • Plants
  • Flowers

What cannot go in the brown garden waste bin:

  • Soil
  • Stones
  • Food waste
  • Sand
  • Plastic bags
  • Animal faeces
  • Large tree trunks
  • Plant pots and garden tools

Please note there are no garden waste collections over Christmas and the New Year.  If you have a real Christmas tree we can collect on your next collection date after the Christmas period if placed out next to your brown garden waste bin.  As the collections are suspended for a two week period, the first collection after the Christmas/New Year period will be on your normal collection day.

Please put your brown bin on the boundary of your property closest to the highway by 7.00am on your collection day. We do not accept extra garden waste, all waste should be put in your bin loose and the lid should be closed. We can empty a bin up to 80 kg.  Please note the new waste service day changes do not apply to this service, please continue to present your garden waste for collection on the day indicated on your calendar.

We make all reasonable efforts to empty your bin.  However if there is waste that is stuck, frozen or contaminated we may not be able to empty it.

If you are moving to another property within the district and wish to continue the Garden Waste service, please contact us by emailing gardenwaste@tendringdc.gov.uk

This is a non-refundable service. To keep costs down, we cannot refund any part of your subscription if you cancel part way through the year.

Please note that there are a few properties for which this service will not be possible due to the unsuitability of the access for the collection vehicle, if you currently do not have the option of a food waste collection service then we may not be able to provide you with a garden waste collection service.

How to subscribe

New customers can join the scheme anytime during the year, by completing the online Garden waste signup form. You will need to make an online payment as part of the online sign-up process.

We will deliver a brown wheeled bin and confirm your first and future collection days. Your year's subscription will not commence until your first collection.

Please contact us and replacement bins will be provided when appropriate.

Q. Can I have a larger bin or an additional one?

You can have an additional bin for £90. There is no restriction on the number of brown bins each property can have and are prepared to pay for.

Q. Will you offer assisted collections?

If all the residents of the property are elderly or disabled and have difficulty presenting the bin to the boundary of the property, assisted collections will be available. Please complete our online Assisted Collection form for assistance.

Q. Will customers on benefits or pensioners get a discount?

Unfortunately there are no additional finances to subsidise the service and it has to be self-financing; the charges involved reflect the actual cost of the service.

Q. Can we pay in instalments or through our council tax?

No the payment is paid annually through a variety of methods. Please see above.

Q. What is the size of the bin?

It is a 240 litre wheeled bin.

Q. When will it launch in my area?

The service is now available to all residents in the Tendring District.

Q. Does it mean we can’t use the green bags anymore?

There are currently no plans to withdraw the green bag service although this will be reviewed once the new service has been rolled out throughout the district.  It should be noted that garden waste collected in green bags is sent to landfill.

Q. Will the Recycling Centres for Household Waste (RCHW) no longer take Garden Waste?

The RCHW are operated by Essex County Council who decide which materials are accepted. We have not been informed that there are any plans to stop taking garden waste.

No, your subscription covers the whole year.

Q. Can I share a bin with my neighbours?

Yes, although one resident will be responsible for payment to TDC.

Q. Why can’t garden waste go in my black sack waste?

The government has set Tendring targets for recycling which we need to achieve. Therefore the Council has banned garden waste from black sacks with the aim to divert it from landfill to being composted.

Q. Do the council offer a bin cleaning service?

Tendring District does not offer this service.

Q. When would be my renewal date?

Your renewal date is from the first scheduled collection following the delivery of your garden waste bin.

As the collections are suspended for a two week period, the first collection after the Christmas/New Year period will be on your normal collection day.

Q. Will you collect my real Christmas tree?

We will collect your real Christmas tree as part of the garden scheme; just put it out next to your bin on your collection day.
